Una de las principales diferencias radica en si un programa monitorea enterococos o E. coli. El tipo de bacteria monitoreada por un grupo Waterkeeper est\u00e1 determinado por los niveles de salinidad en sus r\u00edos: marinos, salobres o dulces. Tanto E. coli como los enterococos son indicadores de coliformes fecales que pueden causar enfermedades cuando las personas o las mascotas que se divierten en el agua se exponen a ellos.
